Picasso is sitting in the park, sketching. A woman walks by, recognizes him, runs up to him and pleads with him to draw her portrait. He’s in a good mood, so he agrees and starts sketching. A few minutes later, he hands her the portrait. The lady is ecstatic, she gushes about how wonderfully it captures the very essence of her character, what beautiful, beautiful work it is, and asks how much she owes him.
“$5,000, madam,” says Picasso. The lady is taken aback, outraged, and asks how that’s even possible given it only took him 5 minutes. Picasso looks up and, without missing a beat, says: “No, madam, it took me my whole life.”

The single most important factor influencing a person’s success — whether personal or professional — is mindset. What you think about consistently has a direct impact on your behavior, and not the other way around. So, it’s important to get this fundamental ingredient right. Mindsets motivate individuals to change their behaviors. Mindsets are the goals, beliefs, and emotions that motivate individuals to engage in personal and organizational behaviors. People tend to only engage in new behaviors when they believe that they will be able to successfully perform the behavior, and that doing so will be advantageous. Becoming aware of our thought processes and limiting beliefs is the first step to examining and changing maladaptive mindsets.
Mechanism is not theory or esoteric intellectual blather. It’s business and life management based on simple real-world mechanics. It is how you function socially, cognitively, emotionally, and physically. It is also the sustained establishment, control, and management of your personal and business systems (and therefore your destiny). Sustained behavior change results in a variety of individual and organizational outcomes, such as greater life satisfaction and stronger job performance.
Mastery is about how you practice, not how often. If you want to achieve mastery, you must learn to practice deliberately. It is the ability to grasp skills well enough to be productive with them, well enough to break rules, and well enough to combine them with other skills and ideas to advance your life and career goals. Personal mastery leads to higher job satisfaction, greater goal attainment, higher resilience, lower stress levels, greater purpose and meaning, and higher life satisfaction.
